VEC Intruduction

What is VEC

Vertical English Character (VEC) is a new art writing style which is developed by Yongsheng Zhao. VEC adopts the English fonts with vertical Asian layouts by rotating the horizontal words 90 degrees clockwise. It absorbs the characteristics of pictographic methodology of Asian calligraphy and complies with the conventions of English, that is to say, it is a new creature by combining western and eastern writing cultures. VEC as a new art writing style is so graceful that the art attractiveness could be comparable with fine arts, as paintings.

The critical differences between VEC with regular vertical layout are the writing style and methodology. VECs are generally tall and neat version with invisible square framework. They look like symmetrical even if they are not. The letters used in VEC techniques are selected from existing English fonts. The word is treated as a whole by extending the writing strokes and forming them with such harmony of proportions, which can be recognized as an imaginary character. The effect is rather graceful which can be taken as a work of art with aesthetic quality.

How to build up VECs

There are five types of VEC characters that can be created. We define them as type A to E. Type A is the simplest structure, it can be built up by simply rotating the words 90 degrees clockwise. Type B to D are two-block structures, in which the words are divided into two sections by roots, prefixes, suffixes, syllables or interesting parts needing to be emphasized. The two groups of letters can be assembled into two blocks separately. The difference of type C and D with B is that one of the blocks could be extended into another side of the block. Type E is a three-block structure. It has a similar consideration with Type B to D. Creators could freely develop VEC by one of them in the artistic consideration using the proper rules and strategies.

Type A: One block structure

Type B: Two-block structure

Type C: Structure with up elbow

Type D: Structure with down elbow

Type E: Three-block structure
